variable frequency drive hvac

variable frequency drive hvac selection follows the air or water route through the cell: fan or pump curve, supply voltage, enclosure and how setpoints are held after a sensor change. This page is an application brief, not a claim that one HVAC envelope covers every rooftop or chiller. Upstream coils or downstream dampers can be listed as interfaces; they do not create a separate product landing page on this site.

Material route

Operating context
HVAC rooms typically send supply fans, return fans or condenser pumps through a variable frequency drive after a motor starter is retired. The same cabinet may later see a different fan curve or a chilled-water pump. Those changes alter current, overload class and enclosure even when the kilowatt label looks unchanged. Official HVAC family pages, including Danfoss FC 102 voltage, phase and enclosure combinations, describe a catalogue envelope; they do not prove rooftop derating for your ambient.
  1. Material route: Design input

Name the fans or pumps that must share the variable frequency drive hvac package. Record the highest motor current, the tightest speed range and whether a pressure or flow transducer is required. Provide representative production samples of the fan curve or at least the motor nameplate for the most awkward duty. Throughput should be stated as airflow or water flow under those samples, not as a leaflet kilowatt figure. Work envelope must clear the largest cabinet plus heat-sink clearance.

  2. Supplier answer

The factory should state which enclosure and derating clear the complete duty, how three-phase supply and connected load in kW map to the named motors, and whether EMC filters are required for the longest cable. They should confirm footprint and cooling. A leaflet pressure in bar or psi belongs only if a pump is in scope; for fans, name the airflow basis instead. A family voltage table is a drive rating, not proof that rooftop ambient stays within derating.

  3. Open deviation

If the plant also wants a later bypass, extra I/O or a BMS handshake, list those as interfaces rather than assuming they ride along with a basic HVAC frame. Single machine versus integrated line remains an industry dispute: staffing, guarding and SAT boundaries change when a panel is added to a rooftop. Nominal speed versus validated output is the second dispute—ask for test conditions on buyer fans. See control behavior notes.
